Working with Schools

At Mikeysline, we are keen to ensure that young people are aware of the importance of their mental wellbeing, that it is ok not to be ok, and the importance of reaching out for support to talk through any issues at an early stage. We are keen to work with as many primary and secondary schools in the Highlands and Moray. Through these partnerships, we can help to increase confidence in mental health discussions, raise awareness of our support services, and better understand how to look out for ourselves and other people.

As part of our young person’s service, the support we provide includes:

  • Delivering mental health awareness and suicide prevention presentations/workshops
  • Working with pupil councils and acting on any feedback
  • Working with Guidance teams and developing resources to be delivered in PSE classes
  • Running mental wellbeing sessions with school staff and parents
  • Providing 1:1 support to pupils either in the school setting or at one of our Hives
  • Appointing Mikeysline youth champions as our link between the school, local community and Mikeysline

Primary Schools

We have started working in collaboration with Primary Schools in 2022, the COVID pandemic has impacted on everyone’s mental health, but young people in particular have struggled due to the interruption to their education. The programme we offer can be adapted to each individual schools needs. The programme includes:

  • Delivering mental wellbeing sessions for each year group. P1s-P4s, focus is on emotions, and P5s-P7s, cover topics such as social anxiety, anxiety, self-esteem and coping strategies
  • Presentations on Mikeysline services to P7 pupils
  • Setting up Mikeysline Youth Champions from pupils in P7, young people who want to make a difference when it comes to mental health in their school environment
  • Delivering information sessions to parents, and including the Youth Champions in each session
  • Supporting school staff through mental wellbeing sessions and introducing our referral system

Bee The Change School Champion

If you’re passionate about improving mental health and challenging stigma in your school, contact us to talk about how you can get involved as a Bee the Change School Champion (formerly Youth Champion).

We know that school isn’t the easiest place for everyone, and we want all young people to know they’re not alone.

What would help people in your school to have better mental health? How can we help? How can you help?

There are loads of different ways you could get involved. You could:

  • Maintain a mental health notice board at school
  • Take the lead on holding events in school to mark World Suicide Prevention Day, Work Mental Health Day and Mental Health Awareness week
  • Fundraise for Mikeysline
  • Set up and maintain ‘Kindness Cupboards’ in your school, which contain resources and tools for good mental wellbeing
