Legacy to Mikeysline
Leave a gift in your Will for Mikeysline
Leaving a gift in your Will for Mikeysline is an incredible way for you to provide meaningful and lasting support for our work after you have passed away. Mikeysline receives no UK or Scottish Government funding, nor NHS support. We rely entirely on donations to sustain the suicide prevention and mental health support work we do in the Highlands and Moray. Any gift you leave us in your Will goes a long way to helping us provide our essential services, and plan for our long-term projects.
Why Should I Write a Will?
First, it is important for everyone to make a Will – it provides a clear instruction of your wishes for your loved ones once you have passed away and makes legal matters more straightforward for them during a difficult time. Those who pass away without a valid Will will have no control over what happens to their property – it is a matter decided instead by the law.
Second, leaving a gift in your Will to a charity such as Mikeysline is not only a generous gesture – it is tax efficient! Donations of 10% of your estate to charity can provide Inheritance Tax relief for larger estates.
How do I write a Will?
Anyone can write a Will, but we would recommend speaking to a solicitor to ensure that it is drafted in a way that clearly reflects your wishes. To find a solicitor in your area, you can visit the Law Society of Scotland at www.lawscot.org.uk
We have prepared a legacy pack to help you in the process.
How would Mikeysline use my money?
Mikeysline currently provides three key services:
- Text-based Support: Our trusted volunteers message those in need or at risk throughout the Highlands and Moray across multiple platforms including Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter, Webchat and SMS
- The Hives: Our volunteers provide one-to-one crisis support in person at our Hives across Inverness, Alness, Portmahomack, Thurso, Nairn and Tain
- Young Persons Service: Our division directed at young people aged under 25 provides support face-to-face online and in secondary and primary schools
A gift from you in your Will would be used to fund and expand these crucial services. With more funding, we could provide a 24-hour text support service, increase the number of Hives we operate across the Highlands and Moray (particularly in remote and hard-to-reach areas), and provide more contact in secondary schools to expand our Young Persons Service.
A gift of £5000 could help Mikeysline train twenty new volunteers to provide our lifesaving service to those in crisis. A gift of £10,000 would help us achieve our goal to rollout regular face-to-face visits at every secondary school in the Highlands and Moray.
The more generous your gift is, the further it will go to help us provide suicide prevention and mental health support to those in crisis in our community.
What kind of gift can I leave to Mikeysline?
There are three main ways that you can leave a gift in your Will to Mikeysline: a pecuniary gift, a specific gift, or a residual gift.
A pecuniary gift is when you designate an amount of your money to be donated to Mikeysline after your death, and this can be any amount that you choose. For example, a gift of £5000 would help Mikeysline to train twenty new volunteers to provide our lifesaving service to those in crisis. A gift of £10,000 would help us achieve our goal to rollout regular face to face visits at every secondary school in the Highlands and Moray. The more generous your gift is, the further it will go to help us provide suicide prevention and mental health support to those in crisis in our community.
A specific gift is an item or piece of property that you wish to donate to Mikeysline. This may be anything from a piece of jewellery to help us raise funds at an auction, to furniture or technical equipment that we can use in one of our local Hives to provide face to face support. Once your specific gift has been passed to Mikeysline, our team will ensure it is used in the best possible way to provide support to those who need us.
A residuary gift is when you simply wish for a percentage of your estate (the total of all the assets you own) to be allocated to Mikeysline. The benefit of a residuary gift is that you don’t have to worry about changing the wording of your Will in the future if your circumstances change. The residue of your estate is simply whatever is left of your property after taxes, expenses and other legacies are paid out, so this could be a thousand pounds or a million pounds and Mikeysline will get the percentage you decide of that figure.
Some people may also wish to set up Trusts or other funds after they pass away which can provide support to Mikeysline. These are less common than the gifts described above, if you wish to set up a Trust we will always recommend speaking with a solicitor to go over all your options.
What should my Will say about Mikeysline?
Once you have decided the type of gift you wish to leave to Mikeysline, it is important to include all the correct details so that your gift reaches us safely. You should clearly describe the gift itself, and include Mikeysline’s name, registered address which is 4 Strothers Lane, Inverness IV1 1LR and our Scottish Registered Charity Number is SC046574.
Do I need to tell Mikeysline about my gift?
Nope. What you choose to put in your Will is your business, but if you do plan to leave us a gift in your Will we would love to hear from you and have the opportunity to say thank you!
